بعضی از اسم‌ها به گروهی از مردم (مثل حضار، انجمن، دولت، گروه) اشاره دارند. این اسامی در بعضی موارد «اسامی جمع» نامیده می‌شوند. بعضی از اسامی جمع می‌توانند با فعل مفرد یا جمع به‌کار برده شوند و بستگی به این دارد که به عنوان یک چیز در نظر گرفته می‌شوند یا مجموعه‌ای از چیزها.
اما به طور کلی به‌کارگیری افعال جمع با این اسامی، در موقعیت‌های غیر رسمی متداول‌تر است.
